If gambling is causing worry, affecting your finances or becoming hard to control, you can stop and seek support. You do not have to recover a loss, finish a promotion or wait for the situation to become worse before asking for help.
Find independent support in Canada
The Responsible Gambling Council’s Canadian support directory links to provincial and territorial services. Use the service relevant to where you live to find local information and treatment options.
In Ontario: ConnexOntario offers free, confidential information and referrals for gambling concerns. It is available 24 hours a day. Call 1-866-531-2600, text CONNEX to 247247, or use the chat and email options on its website. Standard text and data rates may apply.
These services are separate from GamblingCA and from casino customer support. You can seek help for your own gambling or concerns about someone close to you.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Spending more money or time than you intended.
- Returning to gamble in an effort to recover losses.
- Borrowing money or using money needed for bills.
- Hiding gambling from people close to you.
- Finding it difficult to stop, or feeling distressed about your gambling.
These are reasons to speak with a support service, not a checklist you need to complete before asking for help. ConnexOntario describes these concerns and available support on its gambling support page.
Limits, breaks and stopping
If you choose to gamble, decide beforehand how much time and money you can afford to spend, keep essential expenses separate and stop at that limit. Do not borrow to gamble or increase stakes in an attempt to recover a loss. A limit reduces what you allow yourself to spend; it cannot make gambling free of risk.
If keeping to a limit is difficult, taking a break or stopping altogether is an option. Ask the operator about its account controls and the relevant provincial service about available self-exclusion programmes.
Self-exclusion and access controls
Self-exclusion arrangements differ in the services they cover, their duration and the steps required to join. Check exactly which venues, websites and accounts are included. Do not assume that excluding from one operator blocks every gambling service.
Blocking software, bank payment controls where available, removing saved payment details and unsubscribing from gambling marketing can provide additional barriers. A support worker can help you consider suitable options. These measures work best alongside support rather than as a guarantee that access is impossible.
GamblingCA’s role
GamblingCA publishes information. We cannot administer casino limits or self-exclusion, access your account or provide counselling. Contact the operator to manage an account and use an independent support service for help with gambling.
This website is intended for adults who meet the requirements where they live. For a correction to this page, contact Jeff.Lagerquist@gamblingca.net. Please use the support services above for personal gambling concerns.
